James would like to see workers trained to improve their skills. I believe this is possible. Organizations should make a habit of providing training for their workers. It can also be through organizing workshops and seminars and inviting special speakers to train the workers on various skills that are helpful in the day to day work of the employees as they strive to improve their performance and that of the organizations. Furthermore, online classes can also be arranged for the employees to enable the work while at the same time studying. If the organization does not have resources to do so, it can simply provide an avenue for employees interested in getting further training to do so. This can be through giving part-time work to employees pursuing further studies so that they can have time to further their knowledge. This will show a sense of caring for the organization towards the well-being of their workers and this will definitely give a positive morale to employees. In a case like Marks where personal issues interfere with work, managers should take an initiative to shown concern for the employees well-being. Giving them off when certain unavoidable circumstances face them while being hard on employees that use excuses to avoid work. Human resource departments should be conscious of what is going on with employees in matters that affect the organizational performance in a significant way. Reliability Of Narrator Reliability of a Narrator Stories are often told by a narrator giving his/her point of view, by using omniscient, limited omniscient, or first person. The purpose of the narrator is to give facts and details, being reliable or not. Three stories we have read in class are The Body, by Stephen King, Defender of the Faith, by Philip Roth, and Everyday Use, by Alice Walker; which give examples of a reliable narrator. Each narrator was a reliable source of information, and told his/her story well. Stephen Kings. The Body, was an excellent representation of first person point of view narration. The main protagonist, Gordie, was not only the narrator but a major character. Gordie told the story as an adult looking back on his childhood experiences. He may not have remembered exactly what was said at the time, but he knew enough information to relay an honest recollection. The reliability of a storys narrator depends upon whether or not the reader can trust the information of the narrator. For example, I became acutely aware of all the noises inside me and outside me, like some crazy orchestra tuning up to play. The steady thump of my heart, the bloodbeat in my ears like a drum being played with brushes... (King 358). I felt that these sentences made Gordie more believable, because he acted more mature than the others. His thoughts ran deeper than most twelve year olds, but it was believable. King had written this story with stereotypical adolescent characters, but they ended up being less than ordinary. As the narrator, Gordie gave his own feelings as well as giving the views of the other three. For example, Teddys head shook without definition, unsure if this was true. Someone had redefined his pain, and redefined it in shockingly common terms. (King 352). Gordies reliability is maintained during the entire story because of his innocence as a character. There is no need for him to embellish the truth, because each event could be altered slightly by one of the other characters. Defender of the Faith, by Philip Roth, is a story in which the narrator becomes involved with the main protagonist of the story. This story is a good example of reliable narration, in that, Sergeant Marx goes through a life altering experience. Through his learning, he shows the reader that each event could have taken place. Marx has not acknowledged his religious differences until the first conversation with Sheldon Grossbart. You can stay and scrub floors or you can go to shul, this is the first recognition of Marxs religion (Arp 118). Given that Sergeant Marx is Jewish, we are able to pick out what is true about the religion and what is false. Marx points out more than one situation where he is manipulated for the benefit of Private Sheldon Grossbart. In doing this, he is letting the reader into his personal experience, regardless of what criticism he may receive. Everyday Use, by Alice Walker, was an extraordinary use of first person narration. At first, I had no idea where this story was going to take the reader. The narrator was passionate of her convictions about her eldest daughter. The narrator felt more bonded with the younger daughter, because she was willing to stay behind in the unchanging environment. The narrator showed disappointment when the eldest daughter, Dee, came for a visit. Dee wanted was to take the valuable belongings away from her mother and sister, because they wouldnt be properly used. It is best expressed in this quote from the story, Maggie cant appreciate these quilts! she said. Shed probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use (Arp 96). The narrators reliability is shown throughout the story by relating her situation to a broad group. Most of us have experienced similar events, making it easy to trust the narrator. Case Method Essay This introduction is intended to provide students with some basic information about the case method, and guidelines about what they must do to gain the maximum benefit from the method. We begin by taking a brief look at what case studies are, and how they are used in the classroom. Then we discuss what the student needs to do to prepare for a class, and what she can expect during the case discussion. We also explain how student performance is evaluated in a case study based course. Finally, we describe the benefits a student of management can expect to gain through the use of the case method. There is no universally accepted definition for a case study, and the case method means different things to different people. Consequently, all case studies are not structured similarly, and variations abound in terms of style, structure and approach. Case material ranges from small caselets (a few paragraphs to one-two pages) to short cases (four to six pages) and from 10 to 18 page case studies to the longer versions (25 pages and above). A case is usually a â€Å"description of an actual situation, commonly involving a decision, a challenge, an opportunity, a problem or an issue faced by a person or persons in an organization. 1 In learning with case studies, the student must deal with the situation described in the case, in the role of the manager or decision maker facing the situation. An important point to be emphasized here is that a case is not a problem. A problem usually has a unique, correct solution. On the other hand, a decision-maker faced with the situation described in a case can choose between several alternative courses of action, and each of these alternatives may plausibly be supported by logical argument. To put it simply, there is no unique, correct answer in the case study method. The case study method usually involves three stages: individual preparation, small group discussion, and large group or class discussion. What, however, can be done with the distasteful emotions felt about the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Surely the citizens of those two cities did not themselves directly provoke the government of the United States to deserve the horror of a nuclear attack. Can it be doubted that their sufferings were undeserved and should cause deep sorrow, regret, and anger? Yet for the citizens of the United States to confront these emotions they must also confront t he failings of their own government. A similar problem is found in two works of literature, Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound and the book of Job found in the Tanakh. In each of these works a good man is seen to be suffering at the hand of his god; Prometheus is chained to a rock by Zeus who then sends an eagle to daily eat Prometheus' liver while Job is made destitute and brought to endure physical pain through an agreement between God~ and Satan. To examine the travails of these two men is to discover two vastly different concepts of the relationship between god and man.    The first question which must be addressed is, "Why have these men been made to suffer?" To simply say that Zeus or God is displeased is not enough, and to say that Prometheus and Job have sinned is confusing. Most Western readers approach these works with a pre-conceived notion of sin which has been born out of the Judeo-Christian theological tradition a tradition which dictates that there are specific moral rules which must be followed, and to transgress them is to sin. While this interpretation of sin may be functional for a reading of Job, it is useless for understanding Prometheus Bound. John Dewey Habits and Will

Would Dewey’s advice for correcting a bad habit work for you? How would you go about reforming one of your habits? According to John Dewey, Habits are inevitable. We are empowered by both good and bad habits. In his essay, â€Å"Habits and Will†, Dewey states that we envision bad habits as such acts of â€Å"foolish idling, gambling, addiction to liquor and drugs†, and we associate good habits with skills such as walking, playing a musical instrument, and typing. We see bad habits as desires and good habits as abilities that â€Å"exist far from our impulsive desires†.Bad habits are not deliberately formed and are also hard to break. Dewey explains that will power alone is not enough; one must follow a specific method to turn habits around. I feel that I, someone who tends to get distracted easily and procrastinate, should benefit from Dewey’s habit-breaking method. Dewey writes that a friend of his remarked that there was a superstition among perso ns that believe that if one is told what to do, if the right end is pointed to them, all that is required in order to bring about the right act is will or wish on the part of the one who is to act.According to them, if a man who slouches is told to stand up straight, all that is needed is an effort by him, and the problem is fixed. Dewey’s main argument in his essay is that this method does not work. Instead, he suggests that in order to fix or undo our bad habits we must replace them with another habit that is of goodness; you must have more than solely will power to defy a habit. I think that I can benefit from Dewey’s method and start a new habit to break my habit of procrastinating.Every day, I feel that I am easily and frequently distracted when doing schoolwork, which causes me to procrastinate. Every day, I try to break this habit and am unsuccessful. Sitting and thinking â€Å"don’t get distracted† does not work because in doing so, I get distract ed by thinking about not getting distracted, instead of actually working. My problem is not struggling to sit down and take my homework out. My problem is getting distracted frequently and taking forever to make progress- especially when I know I have time to spare.When time is running out, I tend to work much more efficiently. My bad habits of getting distracted and procrastinating counteract my good habit of taking out my homework as soon as possible. I am well aware of my habits, and know that I would feel less stressed if I could correct them. Also, every day, I have to listen to my parents tell me constantly to hurry up my work and get to bed, when I obviously want to do just that, but cannot. If I use Dewey’s method, I need to create a flank movement that will form a good habit which will aid me in breaking my bad habits.These flank movements that Dewey speaks of are some action that prevents the bad habit and leads you in the direction of something else. Instead of sol ely relying on willpower alone, I could think of a way to make myself concentrate better and feel an urge to get my work done as soon as possible. One idea I thought of is changing my environment, and instead of sitting at my desk to work, I can move somewhere else, less distracting, such as the library. If I work there, I will feel more rushed and obliged to work efficiently.I will set a goal to get a certain amount of work completed during my time at the library. I do not want to and cannot spend all afternoon and evening at the library, so and I will desire to get my work done speedily, and I will work as if it was late at night. In â€Å"Habits and Will,† John Dewey says, â€Å"[A habit] makes us do things we are ashamed of, things which we tell ourselves we prefer not to do. † He elaborates on the fact that we are our habit. Dewey forces us to admit that our bad habit is a fundamental part of our self.He insists that a bad habit can’t be overcome by will al one. We need to forget the bad habit and find an alternate activity (a flank movement) that can attract us and that we can focus on. He repeats that a bad habit can’t be overcome by will alone, contrary to popular belief, but only by picking up a flank movement. So in order for me to abolish my procrastination, or at least minimize it, I need to find an act that is different from my usual routine. I have to make the completion of this new action my new goal, and focus on reaching it.If I do not, I will continue to do the same thing over and over again, like I have done for years. Ying YIng tells Lena to leave the relationship until you get what you want. They get a divorce am Lena then finds a new man who gives her everything she wants. The last pair are An-Mei and Rose. An-mei never knew her mom because she was kicked out when she was only four because she had relations with a wealthy man after her husband died. An-Meis mother comes back to see her own mother on her deathbed. As she was leaving An-Mei begged to go with her so she wouldnt lose her mom again. An-Mei learns her mother was actually raped and they kicked her out so she had nowhere else to go. An Meis mom commits suicide and at her moms funeral she causes a scene and tells them to honor her mom as if she was the first wife. An Mei grows up and has her own daughter named Rose. Rose has a boyfriend whos family is very racist towards Rose because she is Asian. Ted (Roses Boyfriend) stands up for her. They get married but soon become distant. Rose is a stay at home wife who pays the bills, cook dinner, and etc. She starts to become submissive and Ted starts to take notice. They have a kid but this does not solve much. An Mei talks to Rose and tells her to stop letting him take advantage of her. Rose tells Ted to leave and that hes not taking their daughter to show that she can stand up for herself. Later on the couple got back together. I cant pick one story because I relate to them all and they all hit me. The story overall is special to me because I can relate to it in many ways because a mother daughter relationship can be very difficult especially if your mother has been through certain things. I feel as tho Chinese mothers want to pass on the same message as some American mothers which is to be strong as a women and as a person. They love that was shown was tough love and the mothers were basing their lessons off of their own experiences. The daughters in all the stories are struggling with their chinese identities but they found in their mothers stories which I thought was beautiful. Like with June she didnt like when people spoe chinese around her because she couldnt understand it or when Lindo handed her the letter. After she met her sisters i feel as tho she felt closer to her identity. Two things that we talked about in class that I seen in the film was feng shui and the tiger mother. When Ying Ying is in the house and she starts trying to rearrange things is an example of fengshui. Or when June was younger and Susuyan said In this household, only the obedient daughter. this is an example of Tiger Mother.
